Reading: Matthew 13:47-53
Jesus said to the disciples:
“The Kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea,
which collects fish of every kind.
When it is full they haul it ashore
and sit down to put what is good into buckets.
What is bad they throw away.
Thus it will be at the end of the age.
The angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous
and throw them into the fiery furnace,
where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.”...
Picture yourself along that shore in Galilee, listening to Jesus preach. Enjoy the simplicity of it, and soak in the words, as if it was the first time you've heard them.
Imagine the analogy Jesus is laying out: some fishermen, maybe even the apostles, casting a net into the water, dragging it along for a distance, and then straining to pull it in. It's full of all sorts of fish- the variety is fascinating, but that's not what the fishermen are looking for. They're looking for the ones that are good- they have no use for the ones that are poisonous, or just nasty to eat. Just like modern fishermen throwing the bad fish overboard, they work their way through the nets. The good stay, the bad go overboard.
It's a really simple analogy, of course, but it is a great motivator for us to remember the simplicity of the golden rule: avoid evil, and do good! An excellent, simple method to keep yourself on track is to examine your conscience every night- where did I fall today? Where did I do the right thing today? How can I improve tomorrow? This simple practice will have a dramatic benefit on your life.
Instruct me, Lord, and command what you will. But first heal me and open my ears that I may hear your words. -St. Augustine
